Tips for Setting Fitness New Year's Resolutions

1. Set Small Attainable Goals to Reach a Big One! If your goal is to be able to run 6 miles straight, most people do not try and run 6 miles right away. They work their way up from 2 miles, then 3, etc. until they are able to hit the 6 mile goal. This is a great way to work at your resolutions as well. For example, if you have a plan to lose 15 lbs, start off with working toward shaving off the first 5 pounds. This is a smaller more manageable goal and will help ward off discouragement if it takes a while to reach it.

2. Write it Down and Make a Plan- Of course it is easy for us to say we want to exercise 4 times a week. However, it is so much more powerful if we write down the goal and plan out how we are going to achieve it. At the beginning of the week, take a look at your schedule and figure out what 4 days will work best for fitness! Then, put it right in your planner like an appointment with yourself that can not be missed!

3. Keep Track of Your Progress- There are a number of great ways to track your progress related to Fitness. I prefer the old fashioned method of keeping a hand written journal. However, there are a number of great phone apps that work very well!  Some of them even have graphs where your can see progress over a period of time. Other apps will allow you to keep track of exercise along with food intake and weight. It is great to be able to see how far we have come along with our goals, especially at times when we are feeling discouraged.

4. Tell Other People the Goals You Have Set- This can be a tough one as it means "putting yourself out there". However, it is huge for accountability and support. So make sure to tell the people in your life that are your "cheerleaders", the one's that will help you achieve your goals and encourage you to continue if you fall off track!
