At this time of year many people like to start the new year with some solid diet and exercise goals. Particularly after the holiday season where everyone can become a little lax about healthy eating and working out. However, you don’t need to wait for the New Year to get a jump on workout motivation. You can start right now by thinking about all the ways that you can make your workouts more fun. They have to count, and if you get your exercise routine to go from boring to brilliant, you will start to look forward to doing it. 4 Fun Ways to Make Your Workouts Pop

1. Get Social- Pounding it out on the treadmill or lifting weights can be a lonely thing to do, even with music. You could choose to visit Club Fitness, for example, which is a great way to add a social side to your fitness routine. Joining classes and making new friends can help you to feel motivated enough to get going. There’s no need to worry about going it alone when you can look forward to a group workout.

2. Distraction Techniques- When you’re going through the motions of a workout and you can feel yourself getting bored, it can be hard to carry on. It’s so much more fun to put a 45 minute episode of your favorite show on Netflix and HIIT while you watch. Seriously, 45 minutes FLIES when you’re going for squats, ab work and high knees on the spot and watching your show. You get your TV time in while getting your blood flowing and your heart pumping.

3. Treat Yourself- Okay, not with food or alcohol as these can things can sabotage your hard work. Instead, pick a designer pair of shoes, a massage or a handbag that you’ve had your eye on for some time and for every pound you lose, add a dollar to a pot. Once you hit your goal, you’ve got a chunk of change toward your treat! Rewards for a job well done are a great motivator to stay on track!

4. Pump It Up-Whether you are walking to the store or you’re working out in the living room at home, it can be helpful to crank up that music and move to it. Washing the dishes? Do a little dancing like no one is watching – and even if they are, dance anyway. Movement doesn’t have to be uniform, it just has to get you smiling.

I'm a huge fan of mixing things up....doing sets of strength work, running up & down the stairway, adding some push-ups or burpees. I'm not a fan of the treadmill, especially for running, but if I vary the incline and/or speed settings in 1/4-mile increments, the time goes faster (well, sort of LOL).
