Step Four: Cook the Dumplings
Add the dumplings to the chicken mixture in the slow cooker in two-inch clumps, placing them on the top of the soup. Return the lid to the slow cooker and continue cooking for another hour until the dough is fully cooked.

How Do You Know When the Dumplings Are done?
There's nothing worse than biting into a doughy dumpling! That's why it's important to make sure your dumpling dough is fully cooked before you serve your soup.
When cooking your dumplings in the slow cooker, it's important to keep the lid on the pot the full hour to ensure they cook through. After the cooking time is up, you can check their doneness by cutting into one of the dumplings to make sure it's not doughy in the middle. You can also insert a toothpick into the center of the dumpling. If it comes out clean, they're done!

Do You Cook Dumplings on Low or High Heat?
Using your slow cooker is a great way to make your chicken and dumplings because you can set it and forget it! But it can take a little longer to cook than preparing your soup on the stovetop.
That's because it's best to cook your chicken and dumplings on low in the crockpot to ensure they don't get tough and chewy. The dough needs time to boil and steam in the chicken soup mixture, allowing them to slowly cook and soak up all that flavor simultaneously.
Can I Make Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings with Biscuit Dough?
If you're short on time to make dinner tonight, you can easily skip a step when preparing this homemade recipe. Instead of mixing your biscuit dough to make your dumplings, you can also use premade biscuits (like Pillsbury Grands).
Separate the biscuits and cut them into two-inch pieces. Place the biscuit pieces on top of the cooked chicken and cook them on low in the slow cooker for around one hour until cooked through.

How Do You Store Chicken and Dumplings?
The comforting flavors in this chicken and dumplings recipe are so delicious that I'd be surprised if you have any left when your meal is over! But if you do have a few extra dumplings, there are two different ways you can store them:
- In the fridge. The best way to store leftover soup is in the refrigerator. Allow the dumplings to cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container and keep them in the fridge. It will stay good for up to three days.
- In the freezer. You can keep the chicken and dumplings in the freezer for more long-term storage. Make sure the soup is cooled completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container or freezer bag. The dumplings will stay good for up to three months when frozen.
To reheat your chicken dinner, make sure to allow it to thaw completely. Then, you can warm it in the microwave or in a saucepan over medium-low heat until heated.
