Five Tips for Running with Your Dog

It's no secret that I am a huge fan of running! However, did you know that my dog loves running just as much as I do? Walter is a handsome and very athletic three-year-old Spinone Italiano-Lab mix who has endless energy! When I go on trail runs, I take him with me and he really keeps me moving! Check out my Five Tips for Running with Your Dog.

Five Tips for Running with your Dog

  1. Check with the Vet: The most important thing to do before starting to run with your dog is to check in with your veterinarian. It is essential to make sure your dog is in good health before pounding the pavement with him or her. Some breeds are prone to joint injuries and should avoid running distances, whereas others, like the Australian shepherd, are much more energetic, so play it safe and ask first!

  2. Keep it Short at First: Similar to starting your own running routine, a dog needs to start off slowly with short distances to avoid injury. When Walter and I started running together, I did run/walk intervals where we would run ¼ of a mile and walk ¼ of a mile for 2 miles. Over time, I made the intervals longer until we were able to run the 2 miles straight.

  1. Take it to the Trails: Running on trails is easier on your furry friend's joints and paws than running on the pavement. It is also a great place to start a running routine because you do not have to worry about traffic.

  1. Stop for Water: Just as we humans need to hydrate while running, our pups do too! In fact, dogs overheat quicker than humans so it is essential to make sure they are able to stop and drink water as needed. I carry along this convenient collapsible water bowl for him to drink from.

  1. Nourish Properly: Make sure your dog is getting the proper nourishment as you increase their activity level. We humans are very conscious of what we put into our bodies, but often do not think about our pet's diet. Recently, I discovered Supreme Source Pet Food® at our local Hannaford Grocery Store and decided to have Walter give it a try!

Supreme Source Pet Food

I was out on a run with Walter when I realized that I carefully scrutinize labels at the store when buying food for my family, however I never really pay much attention to the labels on his food. On my next trip to Hannaford I decided to really look at the labels of the various dog foods. This is when I discovered Supreme Source Pet Food. This dog food is grain free and contains no artificial flavors or colors. It is formulated of a healthy blend of fruits and veggies that are a natural source of potassium, fiber, vitamins and minerals. It sounded like the perfect food for my athletic dog so I decided to give it a try!

  1. I love to take Lucy to the beach for our morning or afternoon walks! Before summer comes into full swing and it's too hot to run with her, I am definitely going to start taking her on some short runs. It'll be good quality time for both of us.
  2. My brother would love to run with his dog but his dog legit loves to STOP AT EVERY BUSH and smell it and PEE - so uh, the running he is doing is close to NIL if he brings the dog along, LOL!
  3. My little Max has such short legs, I don't think he'd be a suitable running companion. He can speed walk with the best of them, though.

  5. I have a friend who raised her puppy running and he is the best running partner out there. But it can be so hard and so many people forget that dogs need water too!

  12. I have run with client's dogs over the years and I am working with one now that I hope will get better. He thinks when I run it is a game and then he tries to jump all over me. Not effective! We made it past 20 feet this week so we will keep working on it!
  13. What a fun way to stay healthy together! Dogs need detox too and its amazing how supreme source pet food is able to provide that!
  14. I will keep this in mind when I get a dog... These are all great tips to follow when your running partner is your furry, 4 legged buddy ; )

  16. Great post! As a self defense nerd/dog lover, I'd say that keeping yourself aware of safety issues is also super important. I've seen many dog walkers who are so distracted by their dogs that they don't seem to be aware of potential dangers. Just something to keep in mind!
  17. I love to stay healthy and for that, I go for running every morning. From now on I will take my dog with me and we both will stay healthy together.
