How Do I Make These Easy Halloween Cookies?

These adorable cookies might look complicated, but they’re actually super simple to make! That’s because there’s no decorating involved. Just prepare the dough, add the sprinkles, and bake!

Step One: Prepare the Cookie Dough

To make these Halloween cookies, start by combining the flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Then, in a separate bowl, beat the butter until it’s light and fluffy. Add the sugar and continue beating for around five more minutes, then mix in the egg and vanilla extract until the mixture is well combined. Mix in the dry ingredients and beat until mixed. Next, add the milk to the dough while the mixer is running, adding just enough liquid to soften the dough. Then, add orange food coloring (if desired) to dough and mix until combined and uniform in color. Add more food coloring if necessary to reach desired color of orange.

Step Two: Decorate the Cookies

After preparing the dough, use a small cookie scoop to portion the dough and shape each piece into a smooth ball. Roll the dough ball in your colored sugar or sprinkles and place it on a baking sheet. Continue decorating your cookies and placing them on the baking sheet, leaving around one inch between each cookie to allow for spreading.

Step Three: Bake the Cookies

When all the dough has been decorated, place the baking sheet in the oven to cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cookies are puffed and the edges are set. When the cook time is up, remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for two to three minutes, then press the Hershey’s Kisses and Hugs into the top of each cookie. After that, transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Step Four: Melt the Orange Candy

While the cookies are cooling, place the orange candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Melt the candy in the microwave for one minute, then remove the bowl and stir to continue melting the chocolate with the residual heat. Return the bowl to the microwave to continue melting, stirring every 15 seconds. If the candy is too thick, mix in some coconut oil or vegetable shortening until the desired consistency is reached.

Step Five: Decorate the Cookies

Transfer the melted orange candy to a piping bag and cut the tip off the bag. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top of each cookie. Allow the chocolate to cool and harden before serving.

Easy Halloween Cookies Baking Tips

These adorable cookies aren’t just cute – they’re also easy to make! And with these baking tips, you’ll be on your way to baking the most delicious cookies this Halloween.

  • Add the candy while the cookies are still hot. To get the best results, it’s important to press the Hershey’s candies into the top of each cookie immediately when they come out of the oven. The warm cookie will help the candy soften and create the proper indention on the top of each treat.
  • Don’t touch the sprinkles. Since most sprinkles are made out of sugar, baking them could cause the sprinkles to appear as though they’re melting. To help them keep their shape, avoid touching the sprinkles while they cookies cool. As the sprinkles cool, they will re-harden and re-shape.
  • Try to keep the sprinkles from touching the pan. While the sprinkles on top of your cookies will retain their shape, sprinkles touching the pan may melt while the cookies bake. When the melted sprinkles cook, they may harden and become crunchy. That’s why it’s a good idea to add sprinkles to the top of your cookies and avoid placing sprinkles on the bottom of the dough ball.

These cookies taste best when they’re fresh, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them for a few days after they’re finished baking. Transfer the cooled cookies to an airtight container and store them at room temperature. When stored properly, the cookies will stay good for up to four days.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • Beat the butter at medium speed for 5 minutes. Scrape down the sides. Add the sugar and continue beating for 5 to 7 minutes or until fluffy.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract, beating until evenly combined. Add the flour mixture and beat until mixed.
  • Slowly add the milk to the dough as the mixer runs, adding just enough to soften the dough.
  • Add orange food coloring (if desired) to dough and mix until combined and uniform in color. Add more food coloring if necessary to reach desired color of orange.
  • Using a small (1 tablespoon) cookie scoop, portion the cookie dough and shape into balls. Roll each ball in the colored sugar or sprinkles, if desired. Place on the baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the cookies are puffed and the edges are set.
  • Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 2 to 3 minutes before pressing one candy into the center of each cookie.
  • Transfer to a wire rack and allow the cookies to cool completely. The candies will look like they are melting but do not disturb them and they will resolidify in the correct shape.
  • If desired, place the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute and stir well so the candy continues to melt with the residual heat. If needed, add to the microwave again, stirring vigorously every 15 seconds until melted. If the candy melts are too thick, add coconut oil or vegetable shortening a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Transfer the melted candy into a piping bag and drizzle over the cookies. Allow to set completely before storing.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or refrigerate for up to 3 weeks. Cooled cookies can also be frozen but sudden temperature changes may cause the candy to “bloom” which is harmless but not pretty.
