Five Safety Tips for Runners
Are you an avid runner or just getting started? Whatever the case, here are five safety tips for runners to keep you safe and sound on your runs! One of my favorite tips is to wear Road ID!
It seems like I read something in the paper or hear a story on the radio every week about a runner or cyclist being hit by a car operated by a distracted driver. In fact, I have witnessed a number of distracted drivers while I have been running. Once I had to jump off the road as a teen driver was on her phone swerving into the break down lane. She saw me at the last minute and swerved back into her lane. It was frightening and I am glad that I was completely aware of my surroundings at that moment. I have to admit that this has created a lot of anxiety for me before I head out for a run. In order to alleviate that, I came up with a list of 5 things to keep me and you safe while running. Check out these top Five Safety Tips for Runners.
What are some good safety tips for runners?
Run Facing Traffic
Always run facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles and you are able to move out of the way if you spot a distracted driver. Never assume the driver sees you, especially when you are running past parking lot entrances or across the street. The last thing you want is for something to happen, and although you can get a car accident lawyer to help you in this situation, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Wear bright colors that are easily seen, such as fluorescent yellow (or my favorite, neon pink). If you are running in the early morning hours or close to sunset, make sure to shop for reflective gear now to wear for safety. Also, wear a headlamp or carry a light if it is getting dark outside. I have a flashing red LED lighted band that I wear on my upper arm in addition to my headlamp during dark hours.

Inform other people before you run
Make sure to let someone know when and where you are headed for your run. I always tell my husband my route and how long I plan on it taking me. Also, I always carry my cell phone, even for shorter runs. One other thing to check out some of the phone apps out there that you can share where you are running in real time.

If you listen to music when you run...
I do love listening to music while I run, but had stopped doing this for safety reasons. However, I recently discovered the Aftershokz Titanium Headphones and have started listening to my beloved running music again. What makes these safe? They are bone conduction headphones that sit outside of your ear that way you can listen to music, but also hear what is going on around you. Check out my complete review of Aftershokz Titanium Headphones. I do keep the volume low so I can hear what is happening in my surroundings.

Wear Proper Footwear
The quality and standard of the footwear you are wearing is hugely important here, as it's going to help you to look after your feet so much better. It's therefore a good idea to look into The Good Feet Store Reviews if you want to make sure that you are going to look after your feet properly while running.
Wear Road ID
Make sure you are wearing some form of identification, especially when running alone. I love my Road ID that I strap around my ankle. They also make identification bracelets and ID's you can attach to your sneaker. They are terrific to wear for cycling or swimming!
