Five Fun Ideas for Outdoor Fitness

Exercising outdoors is a bit like eating outdoors. Somehow, it’s just better. Fresh air really is good for your physical healthy. Of course, just being outside can have mental health benefits, especially if you can connect with nature. With that in mind, here are five fun and easy ways to fit in more outdoor exercise sessions.

Find an outdoor gym

It’s increasingly common to find proper outdoor exercise facilities, particularly if you live in a city. Even if you don’t have any near you, there’s a good chance you can find a place you can work out without bothering anyone. Doing your regular workout in different locations can be an easy way to mix up your exercise routine.

Try parkour (free-running)

By now, you’ve probably seen parkour on film, TV, or just the internet. Free runners are the people who run through urban environments undeterred by any obstacle and looking effortlessly cool. At least, that’s what the best of them do. For most free runners, however, parkour is simply a fun (and kind of practical) way to get fit.

Get on your bike!

Cycling checks all kinds of boxes for both physical and mental health. It’s great cardio, does wonders for your core muscles, and still lets you enjoy the world around you. There are two main ways you can approach outdoor cycling. One is to commute and the other is to cycle for leisure. Commuting by bicycle is becoming increasingly popular. It is safe provided that you take the time to learn how to handle a bicycle on a public road. With that said, it’s still advisable to have proper cyclist insurance.

The simple fact of the matter is that anybody using a public road may find themselves involved in an accident. Having insurance covers you if you are at fault. It also protects you from being falsely accused of causing an accident. Remember, most drivers will have an insurance company fighting their corner. If bike commuting isn’t for you, then you can stick to leisure cycling. This gives you the opportunity to minimize the time you spend on public roads. It also means that you can use the roads at quiet times.

Put your roller skates on

As with cycling, you can also use skates to commute although it’s less common. Unlike cyclists, however, you’re generally fine to use sidewalks when on skates. Just be considerate to people walking.

Skates come in two main forms, quads and inlines. Quads are probably what most people think of when they think of rollerskates. They have four wheels set in two pairs. One pair is towards the front of the skates and the other towards the back. Quads are great if you fancy learning to dance on skates but they are challenging to use on roads.

Inline skates also tend to have four wheels but they are set in a straight line (hence the name). They may look unstable but actually, it’s much easier to balance on them. This is why they’re the choice of skate commuters and used for most skating activities (other than skate dancing).

Try a skateboard

Skateboards aren’t only for kids (ask Tony Hawk). They can be great fun for adults too. You’re never too old to learn to use one. Just make sure you wear proper safety gear.
