How do I make the Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats?

This Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats recipe takes slightly longer to make than a batch of traditional Rice Krispies Treats. This is because you must create three different colored layers to create the candy corn look. Here is what you will need to do to make them.

Step 1: Make the Yellow Layer

Spray the pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. Combine the butter and marshmallows in a large mixing bowl for the yellow layer. Cook for 2 minutes or until the butter is mostly melted. Remove from the microwave and stir well. Add the yellow dye and stir until no color streaks are left. Then, add the almond extract and stir again. Add the rice cereal for the yellow layer and fold in until all the cereal is well coated.

Pour into the prepared pan and push it all to the outer edge of the pan. Using your hands, even out the cereal mixture until it makes a nice, level layer all the way around, with about a 4-inch circle left open in the middle. Use a flat-bottomed measuring cup to press up against the inside edges of the circle and around the top to make it nice and smooth.

Step 2: Create the Orange Layer

Combine the marshmallows and butter for the orange layer in a medium mixing bowl. Cook for a minute or until the butter is mostly melted. Stir well and add the orange dye. Stir until no color streaks appear. Add the almond extract and mix again. Add the cereal and fold together the ingredients until the rice cereal is well coated.

Pour into the pan and shape it into the same type of circle as the yellow layer, leaving about a 1-inch hole in the middle. Be sure to make the second layer the same height as the first. This may take a minute or two to shape it. It's worth it, though.

Step 3: Make the White Layer

Combine the marshmallows and butter for the white layer in a small mixing bowl. Cook in the microwave for 30 seconds or until the butter is mostly melted. Remove from the microwave and stir well. Add the white dye and stir well. Then, add the extract and stir well once more. Next, add the rice cereal and fold together until the cereal is well coated.

Add the white mixture to the remaining circle and pack it tightly, ensuring it's level with the other layers.

Cover and let sit for 4+ hours or until set. Slice like you would a pie, serve, and enjoy!

Candy Corn Treats Tips & Tricks

  • If desired, you don't have to add the almond extract. This just helps the treats taste more like actual candy corn.
  • You can also add crushed candy corn to each layer to add even more candy corn fun. However, you may need to add a bit more marshmallow to keep up with the added ingredients.
  • If your marshmallow doesn't look like it has enough color after you mix the dye, feel free to add more until the desired color is reached. Just remember, it will lighten up just a touch once the cereal is added, but not much.
  • Be sure to follow the amounts exactly or you could end up with mushy treats that won't set, or worse, dry treats that are not fun to bite into.
  • If your treats are too mushy, add a bit more cereal. If they're too dry, mix a bit more melted marshmallow in.
  • I like to spray some nonstick cooking spray on my hands when shaping each layer. It keeps it from sticking terribly to your hands and lets you work with it freely.
  • It's important that you try to make each layer around the same height as possible. Using a flat-bottomed measuring cup will help you flatten the tops of the layers.

Why are my Rice Krispies Treats too hard?

If your rice krispie treats turn out too hard, it could be because there wasn't enough marshmallows and butter in the mixture or if you packed them down too tightly. Ensuring the right proportions of ingredients is important for achieving the desired texture.

When it comes to marshmallows, using high-quality brands can make a noticeable difference in taste and overall quality. If possible, opt for better quality ingredients for these candy corn rice krispie treats to enhance the final result.

Can I melt candy corn?

Candy corn can indeed be melted similarly to chocolate. The easiest method is to place the candy corn in a microwave-safe bowl and heat on high for approximately 1-2 minutes. Remember to pause and stir or rotate the candy corn every 15-30 seconds to prevent burning. Eventually, the candy corn will become smooth and easy to stir. While it creates a sweet drizzle, I personally didn't find the taste exceptional. However, taste preferences may vary.

What is in a classic Rice Krispie Treat?

A classic rice crispy treat consists of rice cereal, marshmallows, and butter. While the recipe is simple, it offers endless possibilities for customization. You can experiment with different flavors, colors, and shapes to suit various themes and preferences.

How Long Do Homemade Rice Krispie Treats Last?

If stored in an airtight container or in a sealed baggie, rice krispie treats can last for around five days. If they're not sealed or stored correctly, they will be pretty stale after one day. Do not store them in the fridge or freezer. A cool, dry place is the best atmosphere for storage. I think rice treats are the best as soon as they're ready.
