Recipe notes and tips

With many recipes, no matter the simplicity or ease of it, there will always be extra tips to take note of. It will help you to ensure that you can get the recipe right the first time. I have a couple of suggestions and notes that will help you when making this recipe.

  • Don’t omit the crispy onions. They add a great texture and depth of flavor to the dish and really bring it together.
  • Make sure you add enough seasoning. Without it, the green beans can be a little bland. The seasoning will help to elevate all of the flavors within the Green Bean Casserole.
  • If you are cooking it in the oven, and it doesn’t appear to be crispy on the top, then you can try broiling it for a few minutes to get the desired texture and look.

Variations to try

When it comes to any recipe it is always good to hear of any variations you could make and try. This is by no means an exact recipe, and you can do your own thing when it comes to what you add or how you make it. Here are a couple of recommended variations that you might want to try.

  • You can use fresh beans if you wish. The texture will be different as the fresh green beans will have a bit more bite, but it will still taste delicious.
  • If you want to add some meat to this dish then cooked bacon, shredded chicken, or ham would be great additions.
  • You can make this a complete dish if you wish. Just add a side of potatoes and you are good to go. It could be a vegetarian dish or you could add some meat as per the above suggestions.
  • For a festive twist add some cranberries once the green bean casserole has finished cooking.
  • Why not try cream of chicken soup instead of mushroom soup? It might not be the traditional green bean casserole you would usually enjoy but it will still deliver on flavor.
  • Seasoning is important, but there are a couple of variations that could elevate this classic green bean casserole. Suggestions include garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and black pepper.

FAQs

There will always be questions that people may have even though it may be seen as an easy recipe, so hopefully, I will have managed to answer some of the most commonly asked questions below.

Can I use frozen green beans with this recipe?

Absolutely, you can! Just be mindful of the cooking time. The fresh green beans may need longer as the canned ones are already cooked. The frozen green beans are similar to canned and won’t need as long. You might need to adjust the cooking time a little, but frozen can be very convenient.

Can you make this ahead of time?

You can, but it would be advisable to prep this ahead of time rather than cook it. You can prepare all of the ingredients together and it will keep in the refrigerator for 24 hours before you need to cook it. Perfect if you are cooking other dishes that this air fryer green bean casserole is part of.

What should I do with leftovers?

If you do have any leftovers then these can be kept. Let them cool completely and add them to an airtight container or wrap them in plastic wrap. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days, or in the freezer for up to six months.

What meats as a main dish go well with the green bean casserole?

I think this side dish goes well with many types of meats and also fish. Some of the main suggestions would be roasted turkey, roasted chicken, salmon, and grilled steak.
