Three Bean Chili Mix Gift Jar

Happy Sunday, I hope you are enjoying your weekend! I have been on a roll this past week with starting to prepare for the upcoming holiday season. Yesterday, I did some experimenting and put together a White Chocolate Cranberry Cookie Mix Jar. I have received similar gifts over the years and always really enjoy them. It turned out great, so today I decided to try creating one for a dinner recipe. Here is what I came up with: Three Bean Chili Mix Gift Jar.

How to Make the Three Bean Chili Mix Gift Jar

In a small bowl, combine the onion flakes and garlic powder and set aside. In a separate small bowl, combine the chili powder and cayenne (if desired). In a third small bowl, combine the parsley and oregano. Then, layer the ingredients in this order, taking care to firmly press the ingredients down before adding each layer.

  1. Kidney beans
  2. Onion flake and garlic powder mixture
  3. Pinto beans
  4. Black beans
  5. Chili powder and cayenne mixture
  6. Parsley and oregano mixture
  7. Cumin

IMPORTANT NOTE: There will likely be some space open between the cumin and the top of the jar that will not be visible because of the lid. If this is the case, you can simply add a few more tablespoons of beans or a scrunched up paper towel or napkin to reach the very top of the jar. This will keep all of the ingredients tightly packed in the jar and prevent shifting of the ingredients

After adding all the ingredients to the jar, seal and attach the gift tag.

  1. I love gifting and getting food-related gifts! This is such a fun and easy one to make, and I bet it tastes delicious when it's done, too.
  2. This is a charming idea for the gift and absolutely win-win in all respects. Love in a jar - what can be better and it goes right inside you)
  3. This is such a great idea! I love food gifts that people will really use. Plus it would be easy to keep it vegan/vegetarian by using Beyond Beef or just skipping the meat.
  4. Hi! Your recipe calls for one 28 oz can of diced tomatoes, but the card says two 28 oz cans. Which is correct? Thx!
    1. Hi! Sorry for the delay in responding. This is approximately 6 servings. Hope you enjoy it!!! :-)
    1. Hi, I’m not sure what happened, this should absolutely fill a 32 ounce jar. If you look at the ingredients there are almost exactly 4 cups in total which would equal 32 ounces. I’m not sure what went wrong, I am happy to take a look at the recipe again And offer some suggestions.
      1. I see the 32 quart is not full. I’m going to use 1 1/2 cups beans and 1 1/2 cups pinto beans and 1 cup black beans. Or, any combination beans to make 4 cups.
        1. Hi, Yes, you can easily add extra beans to fill it to the top if it is not full. I adjusted it, so it is equal amounts of beans...1 cup of each ( 3 cups total) because there needs to be room for all of the spices as well.

  15. Hallo, wat een lekker recept. Ik ben totaal niet thuis in het klaar maken van gedroogde ingrediënten. Dus heeft U ook een recept hier van?

  17. I thought you need to soak dried beans for hours, even overnight, before you cook them in order for them to cook properly. Are the beans soft after only cooking 2-3 hours?
    1. Hi Fanny, You do not need to soak the beans overnight IF you slow cook them for 2 to 3 hours. They will soften and as the beans break down, they will actually enhance the flavor of the broth.
  18. Hi. I would love to try this recipe but I joined it calls for an 8 oz. can of tomato paste. Do you think 6 oz. would work because that is all I have available where I live? Or did you mean 8 oz. of tomato sauce?
    1. Hi Nicole! Yes, you can just use a 6 ounce can of tomato paste and it will turn out fine :-) I hope you enjoy it!!!
  19. I just made this chili to make sure it worked before I go giving gift jars away at Christmas time. The beans softened just fine after cooking for 3 hours on my stove. As far as taste goes, some "doctoring up" is needed beside salt and pepper. I like some ground cinnamon in my chili so I will add that to my serving. A little brown sugar and some hot sauce will make it a perfect bowl of chili. A great gift for family coming at Christmas.
  20. You should always add tomatoes and salt at the end, as they keep the beans from softening. I would add the tomatoes the last half hour. I think I will change the label to reflect this.
  21. I just tested a jar in a quart size canning jar. Everything fit perfectly. I did have a tiny bit of room at the top, not enough to add more beans but did add a wad of foil to pack it all in. This is better than a cookie mix in a jar. Thanks for the idea!!

  24. Hi, A few questions newbie here... I have a quite few bags of (already) dried store bought beans would they be suitable to use? instead of dehydrating my tin beans. As I want to use these up. Also would you recommend adding the moisture sachet? For long time storage ( what is long time please months or years)? With store bought beans how long is cooking time ? Can this be cooked in an instant pot (pressure cook? )
