How Do I Make Reindeer Sugar Cookies?

You’re going to love just how simple it is to decorate these adorable sugar cookies! In fact, you can make your own cute Christmas treats at home in just three steps.

Step One: Bake the Cookies

Before you can decorate your sugar cookies, you’ll need to bake the cookies. We used premade sugar cookie dough to speed up the prep work on these cookies. But you can also use your favorite sugar cookie recipe to prepare your own treats. Just make sure the cookies are cut into circle shapes to make decorating your reindeer treats a little easier.

Step Two: Decorate with Frosting

Once your cookies are baked, allow them to cool completely on a wire cooling rack. Once the cookies are fully cooled, spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting over the top of each cookie with a flat spatula.

Step Three: Add the Reindeer Face

The final step to decorating your reindeer treats is to make the reindeer face on the front of each cookie. First place two candy eyes in the center of each cookie, then add one red M&M at the bottom of the cookie to form the reindeer’s nose. Finish by placing two mini pretzel antlers on the top of each cookie.

  • Break the pretzels for more realistic antlers. If you want your reindeer to have more realistic looking antlers, try breaking your pretzels in half instead of using the full mini pretzel on top of each cookie. To get an even break, use a knife to lightly press down on the center of the pretzel to score a line, then break the pretzel apart with your fingers.
  • Whip the frosting before spreading. Storebought frosting can often be thick and hard to spread. To make decorating your cookies a little easier, try scooping the frosting out of the jar and into a bowl. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to beat the icing for a few minutes to help beat some air into the frosting. This will help lighten and smooth the frosting, making it easier to spread.
  • Decorate with sprinkles. Add some texture to the top of your cookies with the help of chocolate sprinkles. Before adding the candy eyes and nose to the top of your cookies, lightly top the icing with a layer of chocolate sprinkles. After that, you can add your decorations to the top of the cookies.

Sugar Cookie Baking Tips

Using premade dough is a great way to speed up the prep work of your sugar cookies. But even premade dough isn’t fool proof. Use these sugar cookie baking tips to ensure your reindeer cookies look and taste amazing this holiday season.

  • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper. While your sugar cookie package may suggest greasing your baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray before baking, you’ll have better results if you use parchment paper instead. Nonstick cooking spray can cause buildup on the bottom of your cookie, which may result in burnt edges. To ensure more even baking, add a piece of parchment paper to keep your cookies from sticking without the need for spray.
  • Don’t overbake the cookies. The key to getting perfectly chewy cookies is to remove them from the oven when the sugar cookies are still soft in the center. When the cookies are just beginning to brown around the edges but the center is not quite set, remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to rest on the baking sheet for five minutes. That extra time on the cookie sheet will give the center of the cookie time to bake without overcooking the bottom.
  • Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating. While it may be tempting to hurry up and decorate your cookies after they come out of the oven, it’s important that you give them plenty of time to cool. If you add the frosting while the cookies are still hot, the icing will begin to melt, causing your decorations to fall off. Instead, transfer the baked cookies to a wire cooling rack to help the air circulate around the cookie and speed up the cooling time.
