Putting Your Health First at Work

Between working, raising kids and running a home, it can be difficult to find the time to prioritize health and wellbeing. Neglecting your health can have consequences for both your body and your mind. With many of us spending most of our time at work, here are some tips to start putting your health first. 

Be wary of common risks and hazards

Every job carries risks. While some occupations may be more dangerous than others, there are always hazards to be wary of. Even if you have a desk job, it’s important to be aware of common ailments and work-related illnesses and injuries. Examples include back and shoulder pain, stress, and slips, trips and falls. Your employer should enforce policies and procedures in line with regulations and guidelines but you also have a duty to look after yourself to try and reduce the risk of injuries. Manage your schedule

Managing your schedule is extremely important for getting through work tasks but it’s also vital for finding a healthy balance between work and downtime. If you work long hours and you feel exhausted or you never have time to exercise, socialize or just unwind and relax, it’s time to make changes. Manage your workload and if you believe that you’re doing too much, talk to your boss. Schedule time out for workouts, breaks in the fresh air and mealtimes and switch off once you’ve left the office, finished your shift or turned your computer off. It’s crucial to separate your work and personal lives. Everyone needs time to recover and recharge their batteries. 

Eat well

Many people who work full-time survive on multiple coffees a day, snacks and fast food. If you find yourself rushing around and you don’t have time to sit down and enjoy nutritious meals, there are steps you can take to improve your diet. You can rustle up tasty dishes the evening before to take for lunch, you can buy healthy snacks and you can plan a menu so that it takes just a few minutes to make a healthy, hearty dinner when you get home. Search for easy, fast recipes online and batch cook when you have free time. Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and try to ensure you eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. It’s also beneficial to opt for slow-release foods, which will keep you full for longer. Swap sugary breakfast cereals for whole-grain options or oatmeal, for example. 

When you work long hours or your job is stressful, it can be difficult to prioritize your health. Looking after yourself is so important. Manage your schedule, take time out to relax, be proactive in reducing the risk of illness and injury at work and try to enjoy a healthy, balanced diet.
