Reasons to Get a Good Night of Sleep

Sleep is extremely important for your physical health and mental health. By getting enough sleep daily, you will be giving your body systems a chance to rest and recover, which will have a direct effect on overall health. Unfortunately, in the world we live in today, many people struggle to get in the recommended amount. However, there are a number of ways that you can try to improve the quality of the sleep you do get. In this article, we examine four reasons why it is important to get a good night of sleep.

Important Reasons to Get a Good Night of Sleep

It is essential for Immune Health

If there was one lesson we learned from the pandemic, it was that we all need to get more sleep. Being sleep deprived can have a negative effect on our immune system. A weakened immune system increases the chance of developing COVID symptoms and becoming seriously ill.

Today, COVID-19 APIs are helping. These are making it easier for people to monitor their health and get the information that they need. They are also assisting manufacturers in creating the next-generation of sleep aid devices. Of course, your mattress and pillow might also be to blame for your lack of rest. So, one thing you can do is Invest in a comfortable mattress for back, neck and shoulder pain and pillow to see if that makes a difference.

Sleeping Poorly Can Cause Weight Gain

There are many studies that link lack of sleep with weight gain and obesity. The research done on this topic suggests that hormonal changes from sleep deprivation may slow down an individuals metabolism. There is also a correlation between not getting enough sleep leading to insulin resistance. So, if one of your goals is to lose weight, then you should prioritize  getting the recommended hours of sleep every night. Not getting enough sleep, could be one of the reasons why you can’t lose weight

Improve Your Productivity and Concentration

It is very common for somebody who is sleep deprived to not be able to concentrate resulting in decreased productivity. This is because lack of sleep causes fatigue, fogginess, mental weakness, and even lack of motivation. If you are not sure about how much sleep you are getting, then try and use a sleep tracker app to keep track of the hours of sleep you get each night. By using an app you can aim to get more sleep if you are not getting enough. Some apps can even track the quality of your sleep.

Allow Your Body To Recover

After a busy day, sleep is the essential downtime the body needs to restore itself. While you are asleep, the rebuilding of cells and muscles occurs. So, not getting enough sleep can have a detrimental impact on your immune system and overall health. Aim to get at least 7 hours of sleep per night, and if you are able to get 8-9 hours of rest, that is even better!

Proper Rest Can Improve Athletic Importance

Recent studies suggest that athletes who get proper rest each night perform better. The data points to the fact that well-rested athletes have quicker reaction times, increased focus and are overall faster, than when they are lacking sleep. As an endurance athlete, this one really hits home with me! In fact, I made it my New Year’s resolution to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. So Tell Me…
