If you've ever hosted a slumber party for kids, then you know already what kind of big appetites they have! I knew we needed some foods that the kids would enjoy, but that wasn't straight sugar. So, I was on a mission to find the perfect treat, and I finally did. Let me say; it was a total hit. Kids can be picky eaters, but thankfully this sweet apple dessert was a hit.

We thought it would be fun to set out all the toppings and make an apple nacho's bar! It was PERFECT!  You wouldn't believe how many apples kids will eat when you let them prepare their own plates. So, next time you are looking for something to feed, some rumbling tummies opt for something like these apple nachos.

WHAT ARE SOME TOPPING IDEAS FOR THESE APPLE NACHOS?

When I tell you that the options are endless, I mean it. There are tons of foods that would be fantastic on top of these apple slices. Here are a few of my top ideas:

Dried Fruit: Apricots, cranberries, and raisins are a few ideas that taste great. Be sure to try my delicious Cranberry and Rosemary Shortbread too!

Caramel Sauce: Homemade or store-bought caramel are both fantastic with apples. I could eat caramel with a spoon all by itself, so it's one of my favorite toppings. If you love caramel and apples, try my Caramel Apple Cupcakes for a sweet treat.

Chocolate Sauce: Can you ever have too much chocolate? Okay, maybe you can, but adding some chocolate sauce is perfection when it comes to these apple nachos. Be sure to get your chocolate fix by making one of these Loaded S'mores Boards

Miniature M&M Candies: I am always happy to munch on a few mini M&M's, but kids will go wild for them! Speaking of kids, consider making these Healthy No-Bake Peanut Butter Crunch Balls for them. They will devour them.

Whipped Topping: Whether you want a homemade whipped topping or the stuff that comes out of a can, it's going to be good. One of our favorite ways to enjoy whipped topping is on top of my Instant Pot Oatmeal with Banana Split Topping. Yum!

Those are just a few ideas, but you can add all sorts of yummy treats on top. Go wild and make them your own.

WHAT KIND OF APPLES ARE BEST FOR DESSERT NACHOS?

Because this is such a versatile recipe for apple nachos, you will find that it goes well with various types of apples. Sometimes we find a great deal on a variety, and that's what we go with. Then the next week comes around, and it's something else on sale. Just choose what you like the best, and you can't go wrong. Here are some of our go-to apple varieties:

  • Granny Smith
  • Fuji
  • Red Delicious
  • Golden Delicious
  • Honeycrisp
  • McIntosh
  • Gala
  • Pink Lady

CAN YOU SAVE LEFTOVER APPLE NACHOS?

Apples will turn brown due to oxidization. This can make them look unappealing even though they are still okay to eat. They are much better when you can eat them right away. If you can't, they need to be kept in a very airtight container.

If you know ahead of time that you are probably going to have leftovers or they are going to sit out for awhile, it's best to prepare for that. Spritz some lemon juice on the apples after you cut them. Or soak the slices in some lemon-lime soda like Sprite or 7-Up for 10 minutes before serving. This will prevent them from browning as quickly.
