Smoothies are the perfect breakfast food or snack because they're quick and easy to prepare! And that means they're also easy to customize. Try these substitution and addition ideas to make an amazing smoothie that tastes just like your favorite dessert!

  • Use your favorite milk. Any type of milk can be used to prepare this smoothie recipe. Whole milk is a great option for a creamier drink, but you can also use low fat milk. Or use your favorite dairy free milk substitute, like almond or coconut milk.
  • Make your own apple pie filling. Ensure your smoothie is healthier by making your own apple pie filling with fresh apples. You can even reduce the sugar in your drink by preparing the filling with a sugar-free substitute, honey, or maple syrup.
  • Add some protein powder. Turn your smoothie into a full meal by adding protein to the mix. Toss in your favorite unflavored protein powder to give your smoothie an added boost of nutrients or add more flavor to your drink with some vanilla powder.
  • Mix in some grains. Add some fiber to your apple pie smoothie by adding some grains to your blender before mixing. Rolled oats, flax seed, or chia seed all make great additions to your breakfast drink.
  • Thicken with bananas. Using a banana is a great way to add some sweetness to a smoothie and thicken it at the same time. And while this smoothie is prepared with no banana, you can easily add one to the mixture if you want to enjoy a thicker drink.

Is This Apple Pie Smoothie Vegan?

Since this smoothie recipe is prepared with milk and yogurt, it's not vegan as-is. But you can easily adjust the ingredients to make the drink dairy-free. Simply substitute your favorite non-dairy milk, like almond or oat milk, and use a dairy free Greek yogurt. You could also leave out the yogurt if you don't have a dairy-free alternative on hand.

Can I Make an Apple Pie Smoothie Ahead of Time?

Although this smoothie tastes best when it's enjoyed right after it's blended, you can prepare you drink ahead of time and store it in the freezer if you like. There are two different ways you can prep and freeze your smoothie in advance:

  • Freeze the ingredients. Combine all the ingredients for your apple pie smoothie, except for the milk, in a quart-sized freezer bag or small freezer container. Store the container in the freezer until you're ready to prepare the drink. Add the ingredients to the blender along with the fresh milk and blend until smooth.
  • Freeze the prepared smoothie. You can also prepare the smoothie in your blender and keep it frozen until you're ready to enjoy it. Transfer the blended drink to a freezer-safe container and keep it frozen for up to three months. When you're ready to drink the smoothie, allow it to rest at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes, then stir and enjoy. If the ingredients start to separate as it thaws, pour everything back into your blender and blend until smooth.
