How do I make the Almond Cookies for Valentine's Day?
These festive holiday cookies come together quickly in just a few simple steps. Here is what you will need to do to make the heart-shaped Valentine's Day cookies:
Step 1: Prepare the Cookie Dough
Preheat oven to 375° degrees Fahrenheit. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, using a hand mixer or a stand mixer, beat together butter and shortening. Add in confectioner's sugar and blend until well combined. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract and almond extract. Blend in flour and salt until well combined and dough is formed.

Step 2: Color the dough
Separate the dough in half in equal portions. Then, add each ball of dough to separate bowls. Mix several drops of red food coloring into one bowl and mix dough until well blended, add more if necessary, until desired color is achieved. Mix in several drops of pink food color into the other bowl and mix dough until well blended, add more if necessary, until desired color is achieved.

Step 3: Form the cookie dough into heart shapes
Taking a small portion of dough, roll a thin rope of each color and form a heart shaped cookie. To create different looks: Twist the rope before creating the cookie shape or roll two strands together in the same color or combine the red and pink to make a two-tone heart shaped cookie.

Step 4: Bake the cookies
Bake on center rack in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 9 minutes or until cookies are firm. Let cookies sit on cookie sheet and cool a few minutes before moving to cooling rack. Serve and enjoy!
