How Do I Make This Air Fryer Mushrooms Recipe?

Using your air fryer to make breaded mushrooms is my favorite way to prepare this classic appetizer. That’s because it’s quick, easy, and mess-free! But the best part about this simple recipe is that there’s only four steps to complete. Just follow these step by step instructions to prepare homemade fried mushrooms for your next get-together.

Step One: Prepare the Mushrooms

To get your mushrooms ready for frying, start by washing the mushrooms to remove excess dirt. Then, place the clean mushrooms on a parchment paper line baking sheet to dry. When they have dried, toss the mushrooms with the soy sauce and set them aside to soak.

Step Two: Make the Breading

While the mushrooms are marinating in soy sauce, prepare the crispy breading by adding the eggs to a medium bowl and beating them until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, oregano, cayenne pepper, garlic, salt, and pepper. Add the panko bread crumbs to a third bowl.

Step Three: Coat the Mushrooms in Breading

To create the crispy breading, start by dipping a mushroom in the flour mixture. Next, dip it in the egg mixture, then finish by coating the mushroom in panko breadcrumbs. Continue this process until all the mushrooms are fully breaded.

Step Four: Air Fry the Mushrooms

Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees and coat the basket with nonstick cooking spray. When the air fryer is hot, place the breaded mushrooms in the air fryer basket, making sure to leave a little bit of space between each piece. Air fry each batch for six minutes, then remove the basket and flip the mushrooms. Continue cooking for another 6 minutes, until the breading is golden brown on both sides. Continue frying the mushrooms in batches until they have all been cooked.

Air Fryer Mushrooms Tips & Tricks

You’ll be surprised how simple this recipe is to make with the help of your air fryer! And with these quick tips and tricks, you’ll be on your way to making a delicious appetizer for your party guests in a matter of minutes.

  • Use a paper towel for easy cleaning. Getting mushrooms clean isn’t always easy. But one of the best ways I’ve found to ensure all the dirt is removed from the outside of the mushrooms is with a paper towel. Use the towel to gently scrub away the dirt, then rinse the mushrooms with clean water. After that, transfer the clean mushrooms to a parchment paper lined baking sheet in an even layer to dry.
  • Trim the mushroom stems, if needed. Your mushrooms may be ready to dip in batter right out of the package, but sometimes the stems need to be trimmed. If you feel a hard section on the end of the mushroom’s stem, slice it off before battering for best results.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cooking your mushrooms in batches may seem like a bad idea because it takes longer for the recipe to cook. But it’s important that you avoid overcrowding the basket of your air fryer to allow your mushrooms to cook evenly. Leaving a small amount of space between each mushroom in the basket will ensure the air flows properly through your air fryer, allowing it to fully cook the entire mushroom evenly.
  • Spray the mushrooms with cooking spray. While there is no need to use oil in your air fryer, you might notice that your mushrooms aren’t getting as crispy as you would like. To help the breading get crispy in the air fryer, try spraying your mushrooms with nonstick cooking spray before frying them.

What to Serve with Fried Mushrooms?

One of the best parts about eating fried mushrooms is trying them with different dips! There are so many delicious options that pair perfect with this delicious recipe. Ranch dressing is always a popular choice for serving with fried mushrooms, but you could also try different dipping options to change things up. Try serving your mushrooms with BBQ sauce, honey mustard, marinara sauce, or ketchup.
