3 Tips to Build Running Confidence
In many ways, running is the fitness method of the moment. Not only can you do it with little to no equipment, but it also helps you to get out and about at a time when most of us need that the most. As such, countless first-time runners and veterans alike have started 2021 with their running foot forward.

The trouble is that many of our well-intentioned fitness efforts start to stall a month or so into the New Year. The reasons for this vary and often include lagging motivation, frustration with a lack of results, or, as we'll discuss here, difficulty settling into the swing of a running routine.
Most notably for first-time runners or those who haven't participated in a long time, self-consciousness can stop you from getting out. After all, running in public does mean putting yourself out there. That can be tough if you aren't feeling your best which, given this new fitness focus, is quite possible.
Fortunately, there are some surprisingly simple ways to overcome these negative feelings, and we're going to look at them here.
Invest in a kit that makes you feel good
As mentioned, a lack of the need for equipment is what makes running such a great option, but it doesn't mean you need to make do with your old sweats. Rather, investing in a few key pieces that help you feel your best when you're out is worthwhile. It may be that you turn to lycra leggings instead of the shorts that show off all the parts you can't stand. Or, perhaps you'd be best off with a plus size sports bra to keep you comfortable and confident. Either way, the right running outfit can have the transformative effect of a nice dress on a night out. At the very least, it should give you the boost to get you back out and running.

Consider where you're running
It's also worth thinking about where you're running. Admittedly, off-the-beaten-path runs aren't always the best in case of injury, but nor do you need to run along the side of a busy highway. Rather, seek areas that are populated without being busy such as local parks or popular dog walks. This way, you'll feel a lot less like everyone is watching you, and a lot more like you can focus on your fitness at last.
Remember that you don't need to do it alone
Even in areas with strict restrictions right now, most governments have made allowances for outside exercise with at least one other person. And, you'd be amazed how much more confident you'll feel with another runner at your side. For one, you'll be able to rest easy that fewer people are likely to hone in on you. Plus, you'll be so busy nattering as you go that you likely won't notice how your body looks at all.
We've all experienced some self-conscious feelings during our running efforts, but the key is to find ways around them before they run away with fitness dreams. And, these tips should you do just that.
