Exercising outdoors has become increasingly popular during the pandemic. Being active outside can boost mental and physical health but there are often risks involved. In this guide, we’ll provide some tips to help you stay safe. 

Tips for safe cycling

Cycling is an excellent way to get fit and do your bit for the planet if you usually commute to work or travel around by car. If you have recently started cycling, or you’re keen to dust off your bike and get back out onto the roads, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Try to make yourself as visible as possible, especially if the light is fading or it’s foggy or wet. Wear high-vis clothing, use your lights, and stick to well-lit paths and tracks. Keep to cycle paths where possible and stay clear of cars. You’ll also need waterproof clothing, a high-visibility vest if you’re taking routes that are open to vehicles, and clothing to keep you warm. 

Stocking up on supplies

Whether you’re going out for a run in the park or you’re planning to scale a peak on two wheels or on foot, it’s wise to make sure you have supplies with you. Carry a flask or bottles of water, a basic first-aid kit and some snacks to give you energy. Take a backpack with you if you’ll be out for a long period, and always check the weather forecast in advance. If the conditions are poor, make sure you keep an eye out for advisory notices. If you take medication, or you have an allergy, always ensure that you take it with you just in case you’re out for longer than you planned or you fall ill unexpectedly. If you’re hiking, cycling, swimming, kayaking or running alone, let your partner, friend or neighbor know where you’re going and charge your phone before you leave.
