Since there's no baking involved in making these cute party treats, they're perfect for a laid-back get together. But since the decorations on top are so glamorous, you could serve them at a formal event, too! To prepare these rice krispies treats, just follow these three easy steps.

Step One: Melt the Marshmallows

Place a large stock pot on the stovetop over medium heat. Add the butter and continue cooking until the butter is melted. After that, stir in the mini marshmallows. Continue cooking the two ingredients until the marshmallows are fully melted.

Step Two: Make the Treats

Once the marshmallows are melted, remove the pan from heat and add the rice cereal. Slowly stir the cereal in the melted marshmallow until all the cereal is fully coated. Then, transfer the rice krisipes treats mixture to a 9x13 pan. Press the mixture into the pan until you have a solid bar. Allow the treats to cool completely.

Step Three: Decorate Your Snacks

When the bars are fully cooled, use a sharp knife to cut the mixture into small squares. Place the squares on a cooling rack or piece of parchment paper and drizzle melted chocolate over the top of each piece. After adding the chocolate, immediately decorate each treat with sprinkles. Lightly press the sprinkles into the chocolate to hold them in place. Allow the chocolate to cool and harden before serving.

New Years Eve Snack Recipe Ideas

These adorable cereal treats are so simple to make, which means they're also simple to decorate! Try these decorating ideas to create some cute snacks to serve at your New Year's Eve party.

  • Add a stick. What could be better than enjoying your snacks on a stick? Add a popsicle stick or paper straw to the bottom of each treat to turn them into a cute dessert on a stick for your party.
  • Skip the chocolate. Melted chocolate is a great way to add more sweetness to your dessert, but it can be messy. If you're looking for an easier way to decorate your treats, simply skip the chocolate and add your sprinkles directly to the top of the bars. After pressing the bars into the baking dish, top the entire rectangle with silver and gold sprinkles. Lightly press them into place, then allow the bars to cool. The melted marshmallows will help hold the sprinkles in place without the need for chocolate.
  • Try different color combinations. Gold and silver are popular colors for celebrating the new year. But there's no reason you have to stick with that color scheme! You can use any combination of sprinkles and chocolate to decorate the top of your snacks once they're cut.

Can You Make Rice Krispies Treats in the Microwave?

One of the great things about most rice krispies treats recipe is that they can be made on both the stovetop and the microwave. But since this recipe is for a large batch of treats, I wouldn't recommend preparing the entire batch all at once in your microwave.

But that doesn't mean you can't prepare your New Year's Eve snacks with the help of your microwave oven! Just use these cooking tips to adjust the recipe for this cooking method.

  • Prepare the bar mixture in batches. To make it easier to stir all your ingredients together, I suggest splitting the recipe in half and preparing your treat mixture in batches. Start by heating ¼ cup of butter with one bag of marshmallows in the microwave. When the ingredients are melted, stir in half your cereal and transfer the mixture to the baking dish. Then repeat the process again with the remaining ingredients. After that, you can press both batches into the pan at once to form one large bar.
  • Use a large bowl. Even after dividing the ingredients in half, you'll still need plenty of room in your bowl to stir everything together. That's why it's a good idea to use the largest microwave-safe bowl you have to ensure you have plenty of room to stir after all the ingredients are added.
