How Do I Make Air Fryer Fried Shrimp?

There’s no need for messy oil when you use your air fryer to make breaded shrimp at home. That’s because your air fryer will easily crisp up the breading on your shrimp without all the added fat. And making crunchy shrimp in your air fryer is so easy! Follow these four steps to whip up this easy dinner or appetizer with just a few minutes of prep work.

Step One: Season the Shrimp

Add tons of flavor to your shrimp before you start frying by giving them time to soak in the seasoning. Combine the fresh shrimp with the lime juice, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Allow the shrimp to soak in the liquid for around 15 minutes.

Step Two: Prep the Breading

While the shrimp is soaking, prepare your breading ingredients for a few minutes. First, add your flour to one shallow bowl. Then, whisk together the egg and milk in a separate bowl. In a third bowl, mix both the plain breadcrumbs and Panko breadcrumbs together.

Step Three: Bread the Shrimp

Once you have all your breading ingredients ready and the shrimp is finished soaking, it’s time to start breading! First, dip the shrimp in the flour and coat all sides evenly. Then, dip the shrimp into the milk mixture. Finish by coating all sides of the shrimp with breadcrumbs pressing the breadcrumbs in place to help them stick. Keep repeating the dipping process until all the shrimp are covered in breading.

Step Four: Air Fry the Shrimp

When all your shrimp are breaded, arrange them in an even layer in your air fryer basket or tray, making sure not to overlap the shrimp or stack them on top of one another. Depending on your air fryer’s size, you may need to work in batches to fry all the shrimp. Spray the tops of the shrimp with olive oil cooking spray and set the air fryer to cook at 390 degrees for 10 minutes. Halfway through the cooking time, flip the shrimp and continue cooking.

Step Five: Prepare the Chipotle Mayonnaise

While the shrimp is cooking, prepare the chipotle mayonnaise for dipping by mixing the mayonnaise and a tablespoon of diced, seeded chipotle peppers in adobo sauce until well combined—season with salt and pepper to taste.

Tips for Making Air Fryer Fried Shrimp

Making your own fried shrimp at home is so simple when you have an air fryer! But just because this recipe is easy to prepare doesn’t mean you can’t use a few tips along the way. Remember these tricks and techniques as you make this shrimp recipe in your kitchen.

  • Don’t skip any of the breading ingredients. While many recipes allow for some substitutions, it’s not a good idea to change out any of the ingredients in the breading for these shrimp. That’s because each element in the breading is essential. The egg wash and flour provide a base for the breadcrumbs to stick to, preventing them from blowing off as the shrimp cooks. The breadcrumbs give the breading that crispy, crunchy texture you can’t get from flour alone when cooking in the air fryer.
  • Avoid overcrowding the shrimp. There’s no need to rush when preparing this shrimp recipe. It’s better to cook your shrimp in batches than try to put too many in the basket simultaneously. When arranging the shrimp in the air fryer, leave space between each piece to allow for proper airflow in the air fryer. This will help the shrimp cook evenly and keep them from sticking together as they bake.
  • Thaw frozen shrimp before breading. Using fresh shrimp is the best way to prepare this recipe. But if you only have frozen shrimp, thaw them before adding the breading. Allow the shrimp to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Or speed up the thawing process by placing the shrimp in cold water on the countertop.
