Five Tips for an Active Family Weekend Getaway

*This post is sponsored by Booking.com, however all opinions expressed are my own.

Happy Monday, I hope you had a great weekend! My family and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend away from home. Every year we pick somewhere in New England to visit and embrace the frosty days of the season. Winter in Maine can be long, so it is a fun way to break up the time and get everyone outside. This year we decided to head to the Covered Bridge House Bed & Breakfast in New Hampshire. We had a great time checking out the beauty of the area as we hiked during the day and skied at night. Check out my Five Tips for an Active Family Weekend Getaway.

Five Tips for an Active Family Weekend Getaway

  1. Stay Close to Home: When your time away is limited, it's best not to spend a ton of time in the car. Find a place within a 3 to 4 hour drive from your house to take your family too.
  2. Choose Your Accommodations Wisely: Make sure that the place you are staying at is family friendly. I like to check online to see what amenities are offered, which can be a clue as to whether or not kids are welcome.
  3. Get Close to the Action: When you are choosing a place to stay make sure it is close to the activities you plan to do to maximize your time. It is better to pay a little extra, if necessary, to be close to all the action! For example, if you are planning a ski weekend, staying right at the resort may be worth the extra money. This way you don't spend a lot of extra time driving back and forth and lugging ski equipment around.
  4. Plan your Time: It is best to figure out what you are going to do each day before you get to your destination. This helps with packing and making the most of your time. This also includes planning where you will dine on your trip. It is better not to "wing it" and make your reservations before you head out on your trip.
  5. Travel Light: As travel writer Rick Steves says, "There are travelers that pack light and travelers that wish they had." I will admit that I have been known as an "overpacker"! However, I find that following the tips above really keep me in line so I do not bring a lot of excess things when I travel.

The Covered Bridge House Bed & Breakfast

When we were planning our annual weekend getaway I discovered The Covered Bridge House Bed & Breakfast on the 'Book the U.S.' List at Booking.com. This list features a unique property in each state in the U.S. The Covered Bridge House Bed & Breakfast looked like the perfect place for my family to stay at for our time away together. This historic property is situated in Bartlett, New Hampshire and close to all of the wonderful attractions in the White Mountains, which include: downhill and cross country skiing, hiking trails, waterfalls, wonderful restaurants and tax-free shopping.

This beautiful B & B has five guest rooms each with a private bathroom. We stayed in the two bedroom family suite that had a queen size bed in one room and two twin beds for the kids in the adjoining room. We arrived Friday evening and enjoyed a leisurely night there. On Saturday morning we woke up to the aroma of French toast, eggs and bacon cooking. Our hearty breakfast served there was just as delicious as it smelled!

After our lovely breakfast, we headed out to do some hiking at Diana's Baths, which was just 10 minutes up the road. It was an easy, yet scenic hike that the kid's really enjoyed. Then, we headed into the village of North Conway to take advantage of the tax-free shopping. In the evening, we had a great time night skiing at a local ski resort.

On Sunday, we enjoyed another fabulous breakfast served in the sunny dining room. Then, we explored the property and the historic covered bridge the B & B is named after. The Bartlett Covered Bridge is one of only 53 covered bridges that remain in New Hampshire. The kids loved walking on the bridge and exploring the area surrounding it. It really was the perfect place for our winter weekend getaway. However, it would be a wonderful place to stay during any time of year. In fact, we are already planning our next trip there during the fall Foliage season.

  8. Two years ago my kids and I visited several state parks in our state. It was so fun. We saw nature in all its winter glory, lol. Hiked a bit spent the night in a hotel and visited more parks the next day. We even saw a covered bridge that trip. We have a few more parks to see. I would love to take them to a nice family bed and breakfast.
  9. When my now-grown daughters were small we did a lot of traveling and adventures with them. Your tips for an active family weekend get-away is right on point! Staying close to home, having a plan and traveling light are all very important for a happy weekend excursion. But the best part is when you can find a great deal on accommodations!
  10. I really need to think about doing some traveling this summer. I am not sure how I am going to accomplish this just yet but I think it would be good for my daughter and I. We really need some time away to ourselves. And these are good things to think about.
  11. Ooh, there are so many places we want to go as a family...I am 100% in agreement with you on the "packing light" thing as much as possible - I've gotten good at this for me/the girls, and am FINALLY getting my dear hubby to follow our cue here a bit!
  12. I remember I went to Rohtang Pass, highest mountain pass on the Himalayas at an altitude of 3978 m with my family. We did skiing, paragliding, it was lot of fun. 14. One tip would be including my kids in the planning process. They always enjoy making suggestions on things for us to do so including them to make a decision on where we go (which beach or restaurant) can make it fun for them and gives them some ownership on our family vacations/weekends away.
  15. Great tips - thanks for sharing! Whenever I go on vacation with my family I try to plan out some activities so that we can stay active. It makes enjoying all the delicious food a little easier haha.

  17. I definitely agree with traveling as light as possible and choosing accommodation wisely by staying close to the action. There is nothing more annoying than having to drive hours and hours or bus to get to the action spot compared to just walking there.
  18. Great tips! I'm hoping to head south for a few days over spring break. We will definitely be traveling lightly if we do!
  19. Family trips should be fun, but there's always a certain amount of stress to overcome first LOL We're actually taking our first family trip this next week with only ONE child. It's gonna be weird to not have the two other kids with us on the plane or at the hotel....and as for packing, well...that's ALWAYS a crap shoot regarding the supposed weather. ;-)
  20. It looks like your family had a great time! I'd love to go on a weekend getaway with my fiance. It's great when you can get on a good workout too!
  21. Wow, it sounds like you had an amazing stay and a wonderful family getaway. Packing light is a must for us otherwise there won't be enough room for all of us to fit in the Yukon!
  22. We always traveled to places where there was a lot to do when the boys were little. Sure we went to Disney (once), but most of our trips were outdoor vacations where we could play in nature!
  23. Great tips! I'm ALWAYS an over packer, like big time! On our last trip I used maybe half of what I brought, something I need to work on for our next trips.
  24. These are great tips! I have so many great memories of skiing and doing active things with my parents on family vacations. Your kids will look back on these with so much happiness.
