Tips for Maintaining Family Fitness on Vacation

Happy Monday, I hope you had a great weekend! I have been fortunate enough to spend the last several days with my family in San Francisco. I just love this area of the country! I was so excited to bring my children here for the first time. My only concern with the trip was taking them out of school for a few days. They were a little worried about missing their different sports practices too.  I assured them we would get plenty of exercise on the trip. Of course, I don't like to stray away from my training schedule either.  However, after doing quite a bit of traveling over the years, I have come up with some great Tips for Maintaining Family Fitness on Vacation.

Tips for Maintaining Family Fitness on Vacation

1. Pack Your Snacks- It's easy to fall into the junk food trap while traveling and those calories add up! I like to carry along convenient and healthy snacks like nuts, granola bars, and apples. I also have everyone bring along their own water bottle to refill as needed.

2. Make the Most of Your Accommodations- Check out what type of fitness facility the place you are staying at offers. Many places have at least a small weight room available to get in a quick strength session. If there is a pool available, going for a family swim can be fun for everyone!

3. Walk When You Can- It's amazing how much exercise you and your family can get by choosing to walk to destinations that are close by rather than take a cab or a bus. I had fun seeing how many daily miles my family and I logged on our trip to San Francisco. It was super easy to keep track of our mileage by using my brand new Fitbit Charge 3 that I purchased at Kohl's before the trip. I have to say my kids were completely flabbergasted when they realized they had pounded the pavement for 10 miles one day!

4. Choose Active Outings- Hiking and biking are great ways to check out new places while on vacation! We had a wonderful time doing a long nature hike at Muir Woods. It was fun watching our steps add up on my Fitbit Charge 3 that day as well. In fact, my kids were determined to hit 15,000 steps, so we ended up doing an extra long hike to achieve that goal. In turn, we enjoyed some gorgeous sections of Muir Woods that we might not have made it to without setting that ambitious goal.

Fitbit Charge 3

I have been intrigued by the Fitbit for the past few years, but had never owned one. However, my old wrist heart rate monitor died and I needed a new one. So, when I started researching the best ones to purchase, the Fitbit continued to top the charts! I was so surprised about the numerous features the Fitbit 3 Charge offers. I had always thought it just kept track of steps, but it offers so much more! It also tracks distance, calories, and even flights of stairs climbed! I love the 24/7 heart rate tracking feature and being able to set daily goals. It has several smart features as well:  apps (including one for weather) and it has alerts for calls, text messages, calendar, and apps. It is fantastic to have all this information right on your wrist! And did I mention that you easily can change out the wrist band? Since, I love wearing it so much, I like to keep it on all the time! It is fun to change out the band and dress it up a bit.

Fitness Features of Fitbit Charge 3

Of course, my favorite thing about the Fitbit Charge 3 are all the fitness features it has to offer. In fact, when we were on our trip, I decided at the last minute to participate in a 5k race. I did not have my normal running watch with me. Then, I realized that I no longer even needed it! My Fitbit Charge 3 keeps track of my pace and distance running when connected to my phone via blue tooth. I can also keep track of real time heart rate zones and set goals. I love that it has a multi-exercise mode and that it is swim proof. The Fitbit Charge 3 is a wonderful device to use for training!

Where Can I Buy the Fitbit?

Kohl's is a great place to purchase your new Fitbit! In fact, they are running a sale through 10/26 on the Fitbit Iconic, currently $249.99 (Reg. $299.99), the Fitbit Ace for kids 8+ is $79.99, or the Fitbit Alta, which is regularly $99.99. You can also earn Kohl's cash from 10/22-10/28 and redeem it 10/29-11/3.

  13. awesome list and great ideas! But if you live a regular, daily active lifestyle make sure you aren't pressuring yourself to go and exercise and workout on vacation! Always make sure to rest, but not very many people meet this category! Great post, keep it up! Nicholas Alexander Adams https://true-arizona.org
  14. Great tips!! All of our "vacations" are for hockey and fast pitch, we go to 11 tournaments a year for each kid (3 hockey + 8 fast pitch each, so 33 tournaments) :( It's super easy to be active at fast pitch tournaments, there's lots of walking between diamonds, but hockey tournaments is much harder because of the winter, the lack of walking space at arenas, and the game schedule - there's often lots of driving from arena to arena as well, whereas at fast pitch tournaments all of the games are at various diamonds within one facility. I've definitely found it harder to be active with all of the sports my kids are involved in.
  15. The Fitbit looks so practical I definitely agree with walking when you can . It is so enjoyable whilst discovering new places ! X
  16. Keeping up with your fitness routine when you are on the go can seem so hard. This looks like it would be an easy way to keep up with it!
  17. Walking lots is the best and simplest way to keep active. Or maybe bring some skates for all the family and make it more fun.
