Watermelon Agua Fresca Recipe Ideas
Now that you know how to make a basic agua fresca, the possibilities are endless! Try these recipe ideas to create delicious drinks for all of your summer get-togethers.
- Use a sugar substitute. Sugar is a great option for sweetening your drink, but it's not for everyone! You can use your favorite sugar substitute to help reduce the carb count in this drink if you want. But keep in mind that you may not need a full ½ cup of sugar substitute to sweeten your drink. Use a small amount and add more, as needed, until you reach your desired sweetness level.
- Add some acidity. The combination of watermelon and sugar in this blended drink results in a sweet mocktail. To cut through the sweetness, you can add some acidity with the help of a lime. Simply squeeze the juice of one lime into the blender before you mix up the ingredients.
- Try all-natural sweeteners. If you prefer to stay away from sugar but don't necessarily need a sugar substitute, you can also sweeten your drink with natural sweeteners. Honey or maple syrup are both great options.
- Make it a cocktail. After you blend your agua fresca, it's easy to turn it from a mocktail into a cocktail. Simply add an ounce or two of tequila, white rum, or vodka to a glass with the watermelon drink for a quick and easy adults-only drink.
- Add more watermelon for stronger flavor. If you're hoping your drink has more watermelon flavor, simply add more watermelon. The drink may begin to thicken, the more watermelon you add. You can easily thin out the drink with a small amount of extra water.
- Start with cold ingredients. There's no need to serve your agua fresca over ice if you start with cold ingredients. After cutting the watermelon, place it in the refrigerator to chill for around one hour before you blend to ensure it's nice and cold.
- Strain for a smoother texture. Blended watermelon results in a thick beverage. If you prefer your drink to be smoother, you can strain the liquid before serving. Simply pour the liquid through a fine mesh strainer after blending.

How to Pick the Best Watermelon for Agua Fresca
Since you'll be blending your watermelon directly into your drink, you'll want the fruit to be perfectly ripe and ready to eat! Luckily, it's simple to find a good watermelon before you even cut into the rind. Just look for these characteristics when picking your watermelon:
- Uniform in size. The watermelon can be round or oval, just make sure that the shape is consistent.
- Heavy for its size. When you pick up the fruit, a ripe watermelon will be slightly heavier than it looks.
- Orange creamy field spot. Turn the watermelon over and look for a spot that's a slightly different hue than the rest of the fruit. The field spot should be a creamy orange color, not white or green.
- Dark and dull rind. A ripe watermelon will have a dark green rind with a dull finish.
- Large webbing on the rind. Look out for large web-like marks around the outside of the watermelon, which are known as sugar spots. These webs mean the melon is seeping out sugar and is typically a sign that the fruit is sweet.

Watermelon Agua Fresca
Equipment
Ingredients
- 4 Cups water
- 2 Cups Watermelon chopped
- ⅓ Cup Sugar
- Small Watermelon Wedges optional garnish
- Mint Sprigs optional garnish
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients except the garnishes to a powerful blender and let blend for 1 minute.
- Using a big spoon, lightly skim the top of the liquid in the blender to remove any unsightly foam.
- Pour into a glass and garnish with a small wedge of watermelon and a mint sprig, if desired, and enjoy!
Notes
• Some foam, after blending, is great, but some of the foam just looks weird, so I remove the odd looking foam for a prettier presentation. It’s not much, but it’s worth the extra minute of work, in my opinion.
• If you want a stronger flavor, add some more watermelon to your water, without changing the other ingredient amounts. Just know, it will get a little thicker when adding extra fruit.
• This recipe tastes great right after it’s made, but starts to get a little weird if left to sit in the fridge. So, I don’t suggest making this ahead, for the best results.
• Make sure the ingredients you use are nice and cold so the resulting beverage comes out chilled, if that’s what you desire.
