It’s been a few weeks since I have had the time to sit down and write about my training. I am still struggling to fit everything in, but with less than a month before Ironman Mont Tremblant 70.3, I need to make every workout count. I started off strong last Saturday with my very first Trail Run, but ended the very busy week, still missing a few workouts.
Here is what the week looked like:
-Saturday: I did the Pineland Farms Trail Run 10k. I have minimal (ok, zero) experience running on trails, but I thought it would be a good workout to do the race (and it did not disappoint). The rest of my family did the 5k, and I needed to get in a good run, so I signed up! It was a fluke 92 degrees that day in inland Maine and while I struggled with the hilly terrain, dodging rocks and tree stumps. Ultimately, I think the heat is what really did me in. I felt terrible by the 5k mark, I was dizzy and nauseated, but pushed forward. Around mile 4, I decided to walk up all the hills to make it through without getting sick. I managed to pull it back together at mile 5 and finish the last mile stronger than most of the others, but the Finish Line could not come quick enough! It was such a challenge, over 650 feet of elevation in 6 miles, that is what I normally cover in 13 miles! I cursed the race from mile 2 to the finish line, but guess what? I will probably be the first person to sign up next year! 🙂 This was a much needed challenge and I am looking forward to tackling more trail running and going back next year, Prepared!
-Sunday: Rest Day
-Monday: I volunteered to help out with registration for a 5k fundraiser for the PTO at my children’s school. As I was getting ready to go, I decided to wear my running clothes in case I could also run it after helping with the registration. I ended up being able to make it to the start line a few minutes before the gun went off… (or airhorn?). I was just going to run at a moderate pace, but found myself caught up in the excitement of a race and started to push myself. I tried to hold back a bit, but then decided to go for it and ran hard the final mile. I ended up with an overall pace faster than I have seen in the last 2 years. I decided that day that I need to jump in to some shorter distance races to improve my speed. I have been “all about ” the Long Run for so long, that I have not felt the joy of really pushing myself in shorter distance races!
-Tuesday: My Long Ride Day, I dreaded doing this & I made every single excuse that I could to not go outside to bike, “allergies, the weather, I’m no feeling well, I’M SCARED….” I am scared to bike outside after being in a bad accident last year. I have spent most of my time on the trainer avoiding being outside, because of this. It’s a cycle, the more I stay inside on the trainer, the more I am scared to be outside and enjoying something that I truly love… a vicious circle. I had off work and it was the only day I would be able to do it. I dropped the kids off at school, headed home and contemplated. I decided to text my coach (& friend) to see if she ‘May want to ride a portion of my 50 miles with me?” She texted right back that she would do part of it with me! This was exactly what I needed! I rode 4 miles to meet her and she took me on a 25 mile loop that I had not done before. It was great, my fears vanished and I truly enjoyed being out on my bike. I dropped her off after 30 miles and finished the last 20 on my own, which went by quickly. I finished up with a 15 minute transition run & was thrilled to have such a great training day!
-Wednesday: My legs were heavy, but I was able to get in 6 miles, each mile feeling better as my muscles warmed up. Then, it was off for several more miles at my kid’s school as I volunteered for ACES day, such fun! I helped coordinate the potato sack races 🙂
-Thursday: I planned a long swim and Nothing was going to get in the way! I am embarrassed to admit that I had not been at the pool in 2 weeks. However, I got off work a bit early and made it to the pool! I had the place to myself and did a lovely, peaceful 2,300 yard swim 🙂
-Friday: I had planned my long run for this day, but decided to go do an open water swim with a group of friends from work. I hated blowing off the run, but I had not been in open water since Ironman Mont Tremblant last August. I was dreading the swim and getting my wetsuit on, etc. but it ended up being a beautiful day & swim! The water was warm and I loved swimming in the lake with my friends. I was able to also get in my 1 hour Recovery bike ride!
