This past week was a huge celebratory week for my family. My husband & I had our 13th Wedding Anniversary on Monday, his birthday on Wednesday, our daughter turned 7 on Friday, and I got to officially move into the 45-49 year old age group today, as it is my birthday! So many good things happening, but when my son asked me bright and early one morning, as I was hunched over a pile of laundry, what I wanted for my birthday… I replied, “More hours in the day & someone to do the laundry for me.” He frowned and walked away, it was definitely NOT one of my finer parenting moments, but an honest reflection of how I was feeling at that moment. I did try and pave it over with a “just kidding buddy, a JCrew gift certificate would be awesome!”, but I don’t think he bought into it.
I have really been struggling to fit it all in. I have written about this before, but this has been the hardest time I have had with trying to train. I revel in the fact that last year at this time I was doing 80 mile bike rides followed by 5 mile runs as I prepped for Ironman Mont Tremblant. I definitely did not feel as overwhelmed as I do now training for the 70.3. I have been trying to figure it out and do the best I can with maintaining a balance that works. Unfortunately, that meant skipping a few workouts this week, including a long run.
Here is what my week looked like:
-Monday: 5 mile run, 1,900 yard swim before work. 1.5 mile run after work with the kid’s running club. I was happy to start the week off on such a positive note!
-Tuesday: I have been having trouble with my bike when switching from the big ring to little ring every time I ride, since my major bike malfunction at Ironman Mont Tremblant & subsequent repair last Summer. I took it into my bike mechanic on Monday & he did some maintenance on it, so I was eager to ride it Tuesday. I did 15 miles, with a lot of testing it on hills & it worked like a charm! No more dropped chain…Hooray!!!
-Wednesday: I had off work and had this day pegged for my 14 mile run. I woke up feeling lousy with a headache & lack of motivation, etc. but had every intention of doing the run, despite how slow it might be. I took my kids to school and came back home, procrastinated a bit, then got my fuel belt ready and headed out for the run. It was a beautiful day here in Maine, a bit on the warm side, but “nice”. I felt horrible the first 3 miles, which is not uncommon, but it never got better…. by mile 5, I had started to reevaluate my training plan for the week and I ended up stopping & walking the next 2 1/2 miles back to my house. I felt defeated and not sure where my lack of motivation was coming from… or was it my body just saying “NO”? My husband was at home when I arrived walking up the driveway and was confused as he thought I would be gone another hour, but I told him what happened and he said, “I don’t think your heart is in this kind of distance right now…” He went on to say how much I have pushed through in the past, etc., but perhaps a break is in order? This was something to definitely ponder… I did get in another 1.5 miles during the running meet that I helped coach later that day, but felt disappointed in not finishing my long run.
-Thursday: Rest Day/Long Work Day
-Friday: My Brick: 60 mile ride/1 mile run… I’m not going to lie, I Dreaded the idea of spending close to 4 hours on my bike. I made up every single excuse in the world why I should not do it, but in the back of my mind was what had happened on Wednesday with the long run. I don’t want to give up now… my heart may not be 100% into it, but I know how it would feel if I just quit. So, I got it together and headed out for my ride… Within a few miles, I felt great! I was so glad I was on my bike outside & I was riding really well, I was surprised at my average speed…was it my recent bike maintenance? me being stronger on the bike? or the weather? Well, I do believe it was a combo of all 3, but let’s just say, when I turned around to head home, I was faced with an obnoxious head wind! I was annoyed and watched my average speed dwindle, but at the same time I was humored and humbled thinking about all of my experiences cycling. It is one tough sport, no matter how you look at it and I do like that challenge!
-Saturday: My family schedule was so busy, but I did manage to drag my kids to the pool with me for a short swim of 1,000 yards before we started our day!
-Sunday: I squeezed in a 3 miler after doing a 3 mile hike with the kids. Then, I got to enjoy a Birthday dinner with Lobster, Champagne, & Key Lime Pie, my favorite things 🙂
ps-I am super excited about my new age for many reasons, but here are my Top 2: New Age Group for Tris & an EXTRA 10 minutes to qualify for Boston!! Woohoo!!!! 🙂
