Happy Sunday! How was your week? Mine was kinda like being launched out of a cannon every day, but I am still here to write this post. I’m kidding (a little), but it was a busy week, fun none the less. While I would love to tell you a tale of my perfect training despite this, I’ll lay it out straight. I changed my schedule around in Training Peaks so much that I have tendinitis in my right forearm from all the typing. However, I did creatively manage to hit *almost* every workout.
Here is what went down:
Monday: Rest Day…Nailed it!!!
Tuesday: Most importantly, my sweet boy’s 11th Birthday! This is when my schedule manipulation began…. I had planned my long run and swim that day. I knew it would be tricky, but I thought I could make it work, as I had the day off and the kids were at school. However, I woke up Tuesday morning with a reminder on my phone that I had a hair appointment at 9am. I had completely forgotten about it. I contemplated cancelling, but I hate being last minute. Also, I am by no means a slave to beauty or fashion, but the gray hair needed to be tamed. I figured I would move my swim to another day and do the long run, which was not too long (7 miles) after the appointment. I was getting into my car after my hair appointment when my phone dinged…”Volunteer: Carly’s Class Room-2pm”. I had completely forgotten this and I still needed to run several errands for my son’s Birthday dinner before going back home. I logged into Training Peaks and changed my schedule around 3 times, to make it work. At the end of the day, I scrapped it all because I was not giving up the opportunity to volunteer in my daughter’s classroom and when my son got home, I wanted to make sure his Birthday was special and that is what happened. We had a fun dinner with family and I cooked my not-so-little man’s favorite meal: Spaghetti & Meatballs! We finished the celebration with his favorite dessert: Tres Leches Cake! The other thing I did was order an “old fashioned planner” where I write everything out, so I can keep track of my week better 🙂
Wednesday: I moved my long run to today, so I was up and on the treadmill at 5:30am to log in 7 miles. I was dreading it, but the 7 miles came fairly comfortable…slow, but steady! I got the kids up and off to school, then headed to my swim technique class. I was exhausted when I got there, after the long run and lack of sleep. We did some skill work to start, but then we were timed on a few 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle sprints. I felt like a tank in the pool and my times showed it. My 100 yard time was 5-6 seconds slower than it had been, so I have some work to do! I stayed after the class to finish up my targeted distance and finished with a total of 2,050 yards.
Thursday: I was up early to get in a strength work out from my coach, then I headed to a new class I am taking at the pool: Stand-Up Paddle Board Yoga. I hesitated signing up for it because of my schedule, but I really want to add yoga into my routine and I thought this would be a fun way to do it. I had to go to work right after the class so I vowed to not fall off the board, so I would not have to dry my hair! Somehow I did manage to stay on the board the entire class, hooray!! I rushed to work and when I was finished there, I headed back to the pool to get in the swim workout I had missed on Tuesday. This was a major feat for me, as I have a hard time getting there once, but I was determined. I did end up cutting it short due to timing, but I managed to swim 1,800 yards.
Friday: My long bike ride day: 2 hours 20 minutes. I was really dreading this, but once I got on my trainer, I felt great and the time went by pretty quick. I virtually rode the first 38 miles of the Ironman Lake Placid course. I am actually looking forward to some longer trainer rides, because the most difficult part of the course looks like the last 20 miles of the 56 mile loop. I was just getting into some tough hills when my time was up on the trainer.
Saturday: My legs were pretty sore after the long ride Friday, so I did a 1 hour recovery ride. After that, I did a slow 30 minute run on the treadmill. I was happy to have gotten both of these in, as I had to move so much around during the week
Sunday: As I mentioned earlier, my son’s birthday was this week. He did not want to have a party, but wanted the “Ultimate Play Date” with his best friend. So, on Saturday after his hockey game, we picked up his friend and went to eat at his favorite pizza place (Portland Pie, if you are looking for great pizza in Maine 🙂 ). Then, we went to see a movie they picked out: Hidden Figures. It was outstanding and I felt proud that this was the movie he selected too! His friend slept over and they were up until the wee hours of the morning, which meant I was up vert late too! On Sunday, I took them to a trampoline park and then to the mall so they could go to their favorite comic store. Needless to say, I was exhausted after executing the “Ultimate Play Date”. However, he had such a blast and it will be a birthday celebration to remember for sure! So back to my training… I ended up doing 50 minutes of a 1 hour 10 minute interval ride and skipping my 35 minute run. I would have loved to have gotten it all done, but it was just too much and I was way too tired. I did manage to conjure up the energy to make a batch of Oatmeal Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies though, which I posted for the Sunday Fitness & Food Link-Up!
